Reported first by Deadline, and later confirmed by Variety and Warner Bros themselves, a new movie about Joan is in the making, with Baz Luhrmann already confirmed to be sitting on the director's chair.
Not much else is known about this project at the moment, except for the fact that the casting process has been going on since September. Considering this is coming out of Hollywood, expectations should be set to the absolute minimum amount. Nowadays the casting alone can make or break a project like this, to the point that the movie could end up dead on arrival even before the general public has had the chance to see it. Baz Luhrmann is anything but a cookie cutter director, which makes it hard to guess what his take on Joan could look like. Regardless of speculations, this is exciting news as Joan has not made an appearance on the big screen since 1999, when the star-packed (yet underwhelming) Luc Besson's The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc feature was released. Believe it or not that was 25 years ago. By now the nineties don't even feel like they took place in the same reality as the 2020s, which makes the announcement of this upcoming new movie all the more exciting. Joan's story is one of the greatest stories in history, to the point that people today are still scratching their heads as to whether or not it did actually happen, or if it was just the most insane collective fever dream we ever had. Joan's character needs no over the top embellishments to be captivating, she was the actual main character of her world for a while. All the fingers are crossed. All eyes on you Mr. Luhrmann, please let this movie not suck.
